In February we published the 2024 Impact Report– 10 meaty pages outlining the highlights of our work in 2024. The report captures our new strategic action plan, the growth of our network ,and activities carried out by SOFSA’s various working groups. It does a deep dive into two of SOFSA’s big initiatives: the Food Justice Gathering and the Food Justice Fund. Some highlights are captured below:
- Strategic Shift to “Movement Building” – SOFSA is transitioning from “network building” to “movement building,” emphasizing deeper community engagement, advocacy, and systems change. This shift marks a critical evolution in our approach and long-term impact.
- Food Justice Fund Growth & Community-Led Grantmaking – In its first year, SOFSA’s Food Justice Fund awarded $22,000 in grants through a participatory process where over 700 Syracuse, Onondaga County, and Onondaga Nation residents voted to select the final grantees.
- Expanding Engagement & Membership – SOFSA hosted 78 events with 572 attendees, including listening sessions, open meetings, and working group gatherings, strengthening relationships across sectors. The listserv also grew significantly, showing increased community participation.
- Policy & Advocacy Wins – SOFSA held its first Community-Candidate Forum, advocated for statewide school meal policies, and contributed to regional food system planning. These efforts demonstrate growing influence in policy and systems change at the local, state, and national levels.
- Resource Mobilization & Financial Stewardship – SOFSA raised $587K, with 26% redistributed through grantmaking and partnerships. We also helped nine other organizations secure funding, reinforcing our role as a resource hub for local food justice efforts.
